Black mold in closet: how to remove and stop spreading?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It’s gotten noticeably worse since the last bout of humid weather. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this for good, and should I be worried about my AC unit spreading spores?

Black spots in a closet on an exterior wall are a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, extremely common in Dubai's climate. The wall is likely cooler than the room's air, causing moisture to condense and feed mold. Your AC isn't necessarily the source, but it can spread the spores if the mold is disturbed.

For removal, first address the moisture. Ensure the AC is set to a consistent temperature to minimize the temperature differential between the wall and the room. Improve air circulation around the closet; leaving the door ajar can help. For small areas (under 1 square meter), a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can be effective—scrub, dry completely, and dispose of any contaminated materials like cardboard boxes.

However, if the growth is extensive, has returned after a previous cleaning, or you notice a musty odor in the room, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify if there's a hidden leak or significant insulation issue causing the persistent condensation. In the UAE, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520 to ensure spores are contained and properly removed, preventing spread to other areas like your AC system.

To prevent recurrence, a dehumidifier can help manage ambient moisture, especially during humid months. For peace of mind, a surface sample tested by a microbiology lab can identify the mold species and confirm it's a common type like Cladosporium and not something more problematic.
