How to safely remove black mold and check for hidden problems?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building. I’m worried it might be spreading because my allergies have been terrible this month. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely and who should I call to check for a bigger problem behind the walls?

That black patch in your closet corner is a classic sign of condensation buildup, especially on an exterior wall in Dubai's climate. The constant switching between humid outdoor air and cold AC creates the perfect damp environment for mold.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe it down with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water). Ensure the area is well-ventilated during and after cleaning. The goal is to remove the mold, not just kill it, so physically scrubbing is key.

However, since it's on an exterior wall and you're experiencing worsened allergies, there is a significant chance the problem is more extensive behind the wall or in the insulation. This is very common here when a small breach in the building's external vapor barrier allows humid air to penetrate and condense on the cooler interior surfaces.

You should call a professional mold inspector for an assessment. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to non-invasively check for hidden dampness inside the wall cavity. For a definitive answer on the type of mold and its potential risk, they can take an air or surface sample for analysis at an accredited microbiology lab.

Do not call a remediation company first, as their business is removal. An independent inspector will give you an unbiased diagnosis and scope of work, which you can then use to get accurate quotes from remediators if needed. Look for a provider certified by a recognized body like the IICRC and who can explain their diagnostic process clearly.
