How to remove mold from humid bedroom wall in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, it seems to have gotten much worse. What's the most effective way to handle mold removal here, and should I call one of those professional services or is this something I can tackle myself with products from ACE Hardware?

For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can attempt DIY removal. First, identify and stop the moisture source—this is critical. In Dubai, the wall facing outside is often colder due to AC, causing condensation when it meets humid indoor air, especially during the summer. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation.

Use a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover from a hardware store. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly. However, painting over it with mold-inhibiting primer is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved.

For a spreading infestation behind a large piece of furniture, professional remediation is strongly advised. The mold you see on the surface is often just the fruiting body; the root structure (mycelium) can penetrate deep into plasterboard. Disturbing it improperly can release a large number of spores throughout your home.

A reputable service will not just clean the spot. They will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination, remove any irreversibly damaged porous materials like drywall, and treat the area with antimicrobial solutions. The most important step they provide is a diagnosis of the moisture problem—using tools like thermal imaging cameras—to ensure it doesn’t return. For a case like yours, where the mold is recurring on an external wall, this assessment is essential.
