Can I clean moldy AC vents myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a faint damp smell, and I just found some black speckles around the vent in the master bedroom. I’m pretty handy, but I’m worried about disturbing it and making things worse. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company?

Cleaning visible mold on vent covers yourself can be done, but using bleach is not recommended. It can damage metal components, its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces, and it often only bleaches the mold without killing the roots, leading to quick regrowth. A diluted detergent solution is safer for the vent cover itself.

The real concern is the damp smell and specks inside the unit. In Dubai's climate, where ACs run constantly and create significant condensation, this indicates moisture is present deep within the system, which is the root cause. Disturbing it without proper containment can spread spores throughout your apartment.

For a musty smell and visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use containment barriers and HEPA vacuuming during assessment to prevent cross-contamination. The goal is to identify the moisture source and the extent of the growth within the ductwork and evaporator coil, which isn't accessible for a DIY clean. A reputable inspector will provide documented findings, often with lab analysis, to guide any necessary remediation.
