How to treat black mold in humid Jumeirah apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where my bedroom wall meets the ceiling in my Jumeirah apartment. It’s been really humid lately and I think the AC might not be draining properly. What’s the best way to get this properly cleaned and treated so it doesn't come back?

Black spots at the wall-ceiling junction in a humid Jumeirah apartment are a classic sign of condensation due to high humidity and a potential AC drain issue. The first step is to have your AC system inspected by a certified technician to confirm the drain line is clear and the unit is properly dehumidifying the space. This is the root cause that must be addressed.

For the visible growth, the treatment depends on the extent. For a small, localized area (under 1 square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself using a solution of detergent and water. Never use bleach, as it only discolors the mold and does not kill the roots. However, given its location on a porous surface like drywall and the high likelihood of hidden moisture within the wall cavity, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full scope. Disturbing extensive mold without proper containment can spread spores throughout your home.

Professional remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like affected drywall or insulation, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the underlying structure. To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC is serviced regularly and consider using a standalone dehumidifier, especially during the summer months when relative humidity in Dubai can exceed 80%. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide pre- and post-remediation testing to verify the space has been returned to a healthy baseline.
