Black mold in AC: DIY clean or professional Dubai remediation?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell, and now I’ve spotted black speckles around the vent in my bedroom. It’s been like this since the humidity really spiked a couple of weeks ago. I’m worried about my health and the cost—should I just clean it myself with bleach or is this a job for professional mold remediation companies here in Dubai, and what’s the typical price range for a bedroom?

That damp, earthy smell and visible black speckles are classic signs of a mold issue in your AC unit, a very common problem here in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The condensation inside the units creates a perfect damp environment for mold to grow.
For a small amount of surface mold just around the vent cover, a careful DIY cleaning can be sufficient. Use a microfiber cloth with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, not bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and its fumes can be hazardous when circulated by the AC. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. However, if the smell is strong or you suspect growth inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils—which is likely given the symptoms—DIY methods are ineffective and can disturb spores, spreading them further. This is a job for professional remediation. They will contain the area, use HEPA vacuums, and apply EPA-approved antimicrobials to address the root cause inside the unit. The cost for professional remediation isn't fixed; it depends entirely on the extent of the contamination within the AC system itself. A simple vent clean will be at one end of the spectrum, while a full system clean-out of the air handling unit and ducts will be at the other. The only way to get an accurate assessment and quote is to have a certified mold inspector assess the situation inside the unit. |
