Urgent to hire mold remediation for closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading quickly behind the walls. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold remediation company in to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself this weekend?

Black mold in a closet is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity, especially during summer months when condensation can form on cooler interior walls. The urgency depends on the size and location. A small, visible patch on a surface is less critical than suspected growth inside walls.

For a patch smaller than one square meter that you can see entirely, you can likely handle it yourself this weekend. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Clean the area with a detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes that are contaminated. The critical step is to identify and eliminate the moisture source—this is often condensation from an AC supply duct running through the closet or a lack of air circulation.

However, your concern about it spreading behind the walls is valid. If the drywall feels soft, crumbly, or damp, or if there's a persistent musty odor, the problem is likely more extensive. In such cases, and because this is your bedroom where you spend many hours, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to see inside walls without destructive drilling, which is crucial for an accurate assessment. DIY attempts on larger infestations can aerosolize spores and spread them throughout your home.

For a science-driven approach, the remediation should be based on lab analysis to confirm the mold type and ensure the correct protocol is used. In Dubai, proper remediation focuses on containment, removal of affected materials, and addressing the HVAC system to prevent recurrence.
