Black mold in bedroom closet: remove safely and who to call?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. I’m worried it might be spreading because my allergies have been terrible this month. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely and who should I call to check for a bigger problem behind the walls?

That black patch is likely Stachybotrys, which thrives in the high humidity and condensation common in Dubai villas, especially on exterior walls. Your allergy flare-up is a common reaction.

First, do not disturb it with bleach or DIY sprays, as this can aerosolize spores. For a small patch, a solution of white vinegar can help surface-clean the area. However, given its location on an exterior wall and your allergy symptoms, the visible mold is often just the tip of the problem. Moisture is likely wicking through the wall from outside or from a hidden AC condensation leak, spreading mold inside the wall cavity.

You need a professional inspection to identify the moisture source. In Dubai, look for a company with certified mold inspectors who use thermal imaging cameras and borescopes to see inside walls without unnecessary demolition. They should provide a detailed moisture map and a lab analysis of the mold species to confirm the health risk. The remediation plan must address the root cause—fixing the water intrusion and ensuring proper ventilation—or it will simply return. For villas in communities like Arabian Ranches, this is a frequent issue due to construction methods and the climate.
