How to remove mold from AC leak and prevent spread?« Back to Previous Page

My AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a small black patch of mold near the vent. I’ve wiped it with bleach, but the damp smell keeps coming back, especially in the morning. What’s the best way to completely get rid of this and stop it from spreading, especially with the humidity rising again?

The leak must be fixed first; otherwise, any cleaning is temporary. Persistent dampness from an AC drip in Dubai's climate creates a perfect environment for mold to regrow. Contact an HVAC technician to seal the leak and ensure the drain line is clear.

For the visible mold on the carpet, bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the roots (hyphae) penetrating the material. The returning damp smell confirms the mold is still active. The carpet and underlying padding likely need to be cut out and replaced, as mold within these materials is nearly impossible to fully eradicate.

To prevent spread, contain the area. Avoid using the AC until the leak is fixed to stop adding moisture. Isolate the room if possible and consider placing an air purifier with a HEPA filter nearby to capture airborne spores.

Given the recurring issue and your health concerns (the morning smell indicates a persistent source), a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the full extent of water damage and recommend the scope of remediation. In many cases, this involves removing affected building materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the area. For verification, some firms offer post-remediation testing to confirm the space is back to a normal fungal ecology.
