Black mold in closet: urgent or wait for weekend?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. Given how common AC issues are here, is this something I need to call a professional for immediately this week, or can it wait until the weekend?

Black mold in a closet is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity levels and constant AC use, which can create condensation in hidden, poorly ventilated spaces. The urgency depends on the size and your household's health.

For a small patch (under one square foot), it can likely wait until the weekend if you take immediate steps. Move the boxes away to let the area dry completely. Wipe the visible mold with a microfiber cloth dampened with a diluted vinegar or mild detergent solution. Ensure the closet is left open with a fan pointed at the area to increase airflow and dry it out thoroughly. This addresses the surface growth but not the underlying moisture source.

However, given its location behind boxes and the recent high humidity, the wall itself may be damp, indicating a potential hidden problem. The mold you see is often just the tip of the iceberg. If the drywall feels soft or cold to the touch, or if anyone in the home has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use a moisture meter to check the wall's core humidity and an infrared camera to identify any concealed condensation issues, which are frequent here due to thermal bridging in building envelopes.

The primary goal is to find and stop the moisture source, which is often condensation from an AC supply line running inside the wall or a small leak. Simply cleaning the surface without addressing the cause will lead to its return. A certified mold assessment can identify the species and the extent of the issue, providing a clear remediation plan. For a confirmed, persistent dampness problem, professional intervention is the most reliable way to prevent recurrence.
