Safest DIY black mold removal method for bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I just found patches of black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. It must have been growing since the last time it rained and the humidity spiked. I’m really worried about their health. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself without risking spreading spores everywhere?

First, address the moisture source. In Dubai villas, this is often condensation from AC units or a past humidity event. Move the wardrobe away from the wall and use a dehumidifier in the room for 24 hours to dry the area completely before you begin. This is critical because mold cannot grow without moisture.
For a small patch (under one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective if done carefully. Wear an N95 mask, safety goggles, and disposable gloves to protect yourself. Isolate the area by closing the bedroom door and sealing the bottom with tape to prevent spores from spreading to the rest of the house. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle—avoid bleach as it can release harmful fumes and only lightens the mold without killing the roots. Lightly mist the affected area to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne during cleaning. Gently scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush, wiping the residue with damp paper towels that you immediately dispose of in a sealed bag. After cleaning, spray the area again with the vinegar solution and let it air dry. Monitor the spot over the next few weeks for any regrowth, which indicates a persistent moisture issue. Given that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms and the mold was hidden, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Hidden mold within wall cavities is common in Jumeirah villas due to high humidity and can be far more extensive than what is visible. A proper assessment, including air quality testing from a company with its own microbiology lab, can identify the species and the full extent of the problem to ensure your remediation is complete and your family's health is protected. |
