Could black mold from storage cause my kids' coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I'm starting to panic. I just pulled out a bunch of old winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in our villa in Jumeirah and found a bunch of them covered in this black, powdery stuff with a really strong damp smell. Could this be black mold and is it dangerous enough to cause their breathing issues?

Yes, black mold growth on stored items in a villa here can absolutely be the cause of persistent coughing. The damp, musty smell you describe is a strong indicator of active microbial growth, and the spores released into the air are a common irritant to the respiratory system.

In Dubai's climate, enclosed storage areas like under-stair cupboards are highly susceptible to mold. They often lack ventilation and are subject to condensation from temperature differences between the air-conditioned home and the hot exterior walls. This creates the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive on organic materials like cotton, wool, and leather.

The constant coughing is a typical reaction to inhaling these spores, which can irritate the throat and lungs. Children are often more sensitive to these irritants. The first step is to immediately isolate the affected area. Keep the cupboard closed and, if possible, seal it off from the main living area until it can be addressed. Do not attempt to clean the moldy clothes yourself, as this will aerosolize a high concentration of spores.

For a situation involving health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent of the growth, which may be inside the walls or structure. They can identify the mold species and provide a remediation plan. In many cases, improving ventilation in the storage area and using dedicated dehumidifiers are necessary long-term solutions to prevent recurrence.
