How to treat and prevent mold in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really damp lately, and I just found a patch of black, speckled mold in the corner behind the wardrobe. We run the AC constantly, but the room never feels truly dry, especially after showering. What's the most effective way to treat this existing mold and prevent it from coming back in our humid climate?

That damp feeling and black speckled mold are classic signs of high humidity, a common issue in Dubai bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The first step is to safely remove the existing growth.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning detergent. Avoid bleach; it only removes the surface color and doesn't kill the root structure. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried. For porous materials like drywall or the back of the wardrobe, cutting out and replacing the affected section is often the only permanent solution.

Preventing its return requires addressing the source of moisture. Your constantly running AC may be set too cold, causing the unit to cycle off before it adequately dehumidifies the air. Try raising the temperature slightly to around 23-24°C to allow it to run longer and remove more moisture. Ensure bathroom exhaust fans are used during and for at least 30 minutes after showering. Improve air circulation behind furniture by moving it a few inches from the wall.

If the mold covers a larger area, returns quickly after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness in walls and conduct air or swab tests to identify the mold species, which is crucial for understanding any potential health risks and crafting an effective remediation plan. In many Dubai villas, the root cause is often a hidden condensation leak from an AC drain line or insufficient insulation.
