AC and water leak causing black mold on wall?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet in my master bedroom closet, and now I’m seeing these small black spots spreading on the wall behind my clothes. It’s been humid for the last few weeks and I only just moved the shoe rack to find it. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

That's a classic sign of mold growth from a persistent moisture source, which is very common here given our high humidity and constant AC use. The black spots are likely Stachybotrys or Cladosporium, both of which thrive in the damp, dark conditions you've described.

For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water and can actually feed the mold root structure inside porous materials like drywall. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. You must address the root cause first: fix the AC condensate drain line leak immediately. Until that leak is stopped, the mold will simply return.

Given the location in a closet and on a wall, the mold has likely penetrated deeper than the surface. If the wall feels soft or the discoloration remains after surface cleaning, the drywall is compromised and needs replacement. For any spread larger than a square meter, or if occupants have respiratory issues, a professional assessment is strongly advised to determine the extent and type of contamination. Companies with their own microbiology lab can provide a precise identification and remediation plan, which is crucial for ensuring it is handled correctly and doesn't recur. In Dubai's climate, this type of hidden moisture problem can escalate quickly, so prompt action is key.
