AC blowing black dust and musty smell: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell, and I’ve just spotted patches of black dust around the vent in our master bedroom. It’s been getting worse over the hot season, and now my throat feels itchy when the AC is on. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or is this a job for a professional AC cleaning company?

Black dust around an AC vent with a musty smell strongly indicates an active mould colony in your ductwork or on the cooling coils. The itchy throat is a common reaction to breathing in these spores. In Dubai's climate, where ACs run constantly and create significant condensation, this is a frequent issue.

Using bleach is not recommended. It is ineffective on porous surfaces, its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces, and it is mostly water, which can actually feed the mould problem long-term. For a small, visible patch directly on the vent cover, you can carefully clean it with a microfiber cloth and a detergent solution, wearing an N95 mask. However, the smell and black dust blowing out mean the source is inside the system, which is not accessible for safe or effective DIY cleaning.

This requires a professional assessment. Technicians use specialized tools to inspect the evaporator coil and duct interiors. Proper remediation involves antimicrobial coil cleaning and duct vacuuming with HEPA filtration to capture spores, not just disperse them. For verification, a company with its own microbiology lab can take an air or swab sample to identify the mould type, which is crucial for understanding any potential health risks and confirming the cleanup was successful.
