AC blowing black dust: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to have black dust blowing out of the vent in our main bedroom, and it’s been giving my husband a really bad cough for the past couple of weeks. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and the humidity has been awful lately. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray or do I absolutely need to call a professional HVAC cleaning service?

The black dust you are observing is a significant concern, and I strongly advise against a DIY cleaning attempt with bleach. This substance is almost certainly a combination of microbial growth, primarily mold, and accumulated particulate matter from your AC unit. The high humidity we are experiencing in Dubai creates the perfect environment for mold proliferation within the AC system, especially in older buildings in areas like Bur Dubai where systems may not be maintained optimally.
Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like the fiberglass duct liner and insulation within your AC system. It only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, and its high water content can actually feed future growth. More critically, disturbing this contamination without proper containment and HEPA filtration will aerosolize the spores, drastically increasing your husband's exposure and likely exacerbating his respiratory symptoms, including that persistent cough. This is not a surface cleaning job. It requires a professional inspection and remediation process. UAE regulations, particularly Dubai Municipality guidelines, emphasize the importance of proper indoor air quality and safe remediation practices to protect occupant health. A certified technician will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the contaminant types and concentration levels before executing a controlled remediation. This involves isolating the HVAC system, using industrial HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial agents specifically designed for HVAC systems, and finally conducting post-remediation verification to ensure the issue is resolved. For your health and safety, you need a professional assessment immediately. I recommend contacting Saniservice. Their certified teams are experts in HVAC hygienization and mold remediation specific to the Gulf climate.
