AC blowing black dust, safe to clean with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to have black, dusty stuff blowing out of the vent in our main bedroom. It's been getting worse over the past couple of weeks, and we've all had a bit of a sore throat. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

That black dust is likely a combination of mould and dirt, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round AC use. The condensation inside AC units creates a perfect damp environment for mould to grow, which then gets blown into your room. The sore throats you're experiencing are a typical reaction to these airborne particles.
Using bleach is not recommended. It's ineffective on porous surfaces like insulation and ductwork, its fumes are hazardous to inhale, and it can corrode sensitive AC components. For a surface-level clean of the visible vent cover, a damp cloth with a small amount of detergent is safer, but this won't address the root of the problem inside the unit. Given that the issue is worsening and you're already experiencing physical symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The mould growth is likely extensive inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils, areas you cannot access or clean properly yourself. In the UAE, companies specialising in indoor health can conduct a thorough inspection, often using lab analysis to identify the mould type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. They have the equipment to safely contain the area and clean the entire system, not just the visible parts, to prevent the spores from immediately returning. |
