AC causing kids' runny nose and cough in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been having a really bad runny nose and a constant cough for the past three weeks, ever since we got back from the summer break. It seems to get worse at night when the AC is on full blast in their bedroom in our Jumeirah Park villa. I’ve cleaned the filters but I’m worried there’s mould or something else in the ducts that’s making them sick. Could this be the cause, or is it just the usual Dubai dust and weather change affecting them?

Based on your description, this is a classic presentation of what we term "Sick Building Syndrome" exacerbated by the UAE's harsh climate. The timing, correlating with the AC usage after a prolonged shutdown, is a significant red flag.

While weather changes and dust (we have a unique mineral dust here, not just sand) can cause irritation, the fact that symptoms worsen specifically in the AC-cooled bedroom strongly points to a contaminated indoor environment. When an AC system sits idle, especially in Dubai's high humidity, it becomes a prime breeding ground for microbial growth. Simply cleaning the filters is often insufficient. Mould colonies, bacteria (like Legionella), and a buildup of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) accumulate deep within the ductwork, evaporator coils, and drain pans. When the system is turned on, it aerosolizes these contaminants, blowing them directly into the breathing zone, which is particularly impactful for children.

This is a serious health concern. Prolonged exposure to mycotoxins from mould can lead to chronic respiratory issues and allergic sensitization. UAE regulations, such as the Dubai Municipality's guidelines for indoor air quality, stipulate acceptable thresholds for microbial contamination, which a professional inspection can measure.

I strongly recommend you cease using that specific AC unit until it can be inspected and remediated. A DIY approach is not advised as it can disturb contaminants and exacerbate the problem. You need a certified professional to conduct a full assessment, including visual inspection with borescopes, air and surface sampling for microbial analysis, and a check of the drainage system.

Please call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a comprehensive IAQ assessment. We can identify the specific pollutant and provide a certified hygienization protocol to make your home safe for your children again.
