AC damp smell causing headaches: DIY fix or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell every time it kicks on, and I've started getting headaches. I wiped down the vents but the smell came back after a day. Is this something I can fix myself with a bleach solution or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check the ducts?

That damp smell and your headaches are strong indicators of microbial growth in your AC system, a common issue in Dubai's climate where high humidity and constant AC use create condensation. Wiping the vents only addresses surface dust; the source is likely deep within the ductwork or on the cooling coils.

Using a bleach solution is not recommended. It can damage AC components, release harmful fumes into your living space, and is often ineffective as it doesn't address the root cause. The smell returning so quickly confirms the growth is active and widespread.

For your symptoms and the persistent odor, a professional inspection is advised. They use specialized tools like borescopes to visually assess the entire duct system and often take surface or air samples for lab analysis to identify the specific type of mold present. This is crucial, as some species are more likely to cause the symptoms you're describing. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines on indoor air quality, and a certified inspector will ensure their assessment and any subsequent remediation align with these standards.

A proper inspection will pinpoint the contamination's location and extent, determining if a full duct cleaning, coil cleaning, or other remediation is needed to resolve the issue safely and effectively.
