AC leak caused black mold: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a couple of months, and now I'm seeing a bunch of black spots spreading out from the wall underneath it. I wiped it with vinegar but it came right back worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company?

That black spot pattern is a clear sign of systemic mold growth from sustained moisture. In Dubai's high humidity, an AC leak creates an ideal breeding ground for mold that will penetrate deep into the drywall, carpet backing, and padding—areas you cannot effectively reach or dry yourself.
Vinegar is a surface-level suppressor, not a remediation tool. The mold's rapid return confirms it has established a root system. Stronger DIY cleaners like bleach are also ineffective on porous materials and can force spores deeper while creating harmful fumes. This situation requires a professional assessment. The leak must be fixed at its source within the AC unit first; a technician can identify if it's a clogged drain line or another issue. For the mold, remediation involves controlled removal of contaminated porous materials (carpet, padding, potentially lower drywall), HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to address the root structure. Attempting a full DIY fix risks inadequate containment, spreading spores to other rooms, and leaving behind a reservoir of mold that will continue to affect indoor air quality and potentially cause health issues. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to confirm all affected areas are found and properly dried. A proper remediation will include post-clearance verification to ensure the environment is returned to a healthy state. Given the duration of the leak, calling a certified mold inspector is the most prudent course of action. |
