AC leak caused mold and health issues, what to do?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for the last couple of months, and now we're both waking up with stuffy noses and sore throats every morning. I just pulled the corner of the carpet back and saw a bunch of black spots underneath. Are these symptoms a sign of a mold problem, and what's the best way to handle this health-wise?

A persistent AC leak onto carpet in Dubai's climate will almost certainly cause mould growth, and your symptoms are a common reaction. The combination of constant moisture from the drip and high ambient humidity creates an ideal environment for mould spores to proliferate under the carpet and in the padding.
Your immediate health priority is to stop the exposure. The AC unit must be repaired to halt the leak entirely; a simple drain line cleaning is often the cause. For the carpet, pulling it back to air out is not sufficient. The mould growth underneath requires professional remediation. The carpet and, crucially, the underlying padding will likely need to be removed, and the concrete slab beneath professionally cleaned and dried. Given the visible growth and your physical symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the mould species and the full extent of the contamination, which is often wider than what is immediately visible. Do not attempt to clean significant growth yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen indoor air quality. Focus on fixing the source of the moisture first, as any cleaning is temporary if the leak continues. |
