AC leak causing black mold and health symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of months and now I’m seeing these black spots spreading on the wall behind the headboard. My throat has been constantly scratchy and I’ve been waking up with headaches. Is this definitely black mold and could it be causing these symptoms?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black spots are Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly referred to as black mold. This type of mold thrives in the constant dampness caused by AC condensate leaks, a frequent issue in Dubai due to the year-round reliance on air conditioning and high ambient humidity which leads to significant condensation.

The symptoms you describe—scratchy throat and morning headaches—are classic indicators of exposure to mycotoxins released by this mold. As the mold colony grows, it releases spores and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air you breathe while sleeping, directly impacting your respiratory system and potentially causing these inflammatory responses.

For your safety, I strongly advise against attempting to clean this yourself. Disturbing the colony without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, drastically increasing your exposure and contaminating other areas of your home.

This situation requires immediate professional assessment. UAE regulations, particularly in Dubai, emphasize the importance of indoor air quality, and remediation must be handled by certified experts to ensure it is done safely and effectively, preventing recurrence.

Our certified team at Saniservice uses advanced tools like borescopes to inspect inside wall cavities and air quality pumps to quantify spore levels. We then execute a full remediation protocol including containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial application. Please contact us for an immediate inspection.
