AC leak causing black mold and sore throat—urgent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks and I’ve just noticed black spots forming on the wall behind the curtain. My throat has been feeling scratchy when I wake up and I’m worried it’s connected. How urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned—is this something I need to deal with immediately this week, or can it wait until after the Eid holidays?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention and should not be delayed until after the holidays. The combination of an AC leak, visible black microbial growth, and correlating health symptoms is a significant red flag.

The black spots are almost certainly mold, a direct result of the constant moisture from the AC leak. The UAE's high ambient humidity, combined with condensation from air conditioning systems, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. The scratchy throat you're experiencing upon waking is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores and mycotoxins being circulated by the AC unit. This is your indoor air quality being compromised. Prolonged exposure can exacerbate respiratory issues, trigger allergic reactions, and lead to more severe health concerns.

Regarding urgency, I strongly advise against waiting. Mold colonies can proliferate rapidly, especially in a damp, dark space behind a curtain. What is visible on the surface is often just a fraction of the growth, which can penetrate deep into the drywall. This is not a simple cleaning task; improper DIY attempts can disturb the colony, causing a massive release of spores throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, drastically worsening the contamination and your exposure.

The required action is a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified technicians would conduct a thorough assessment to determine the extent of the infestation, identify the mold species, and execute a controlled remediation process following industry best practices. This includes containment of the affected area, HEPA filtration, safe removal of contaminated materials, and application of EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions to ensure the problem is resolved at its source.
