AC leak causing black mold: DIY or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a bunch of black spots spreading out from the wall near the unit. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell is still really strong and it seems to be getting worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach or should I just call one of those mold remediation companies in Dubai?

The black spots spreading from your AC leak are almost certainly active mold growth, and the persistent musty smell confirms it's more than surface level. Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, this creates a perfect environment for mold to penetrate porous materials like drywall and carpet backing. Vinegar or bleach only addresses surface discoloration, not the root problem inside the materials.

For a leak lasting weeks, professional assessment is strongly advised. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for dampness and indoor air quality in buildings, and remediation often requires controlled demolition, proper disposal, and industrial drying equipment to prevent structural damage and recurrence. A reputable company will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the water damage, which is usually far greater than what's visible.

If you choose to inspect further yourself, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Check for softness or discoloration on the wall and carpet well beyond the visible spots. However, disturbing it without containment can spread spores throughout the room. The core issue is the AC leak—this must be fixed by an HVAC technician first, regardless of the cleanup method, or the mold will return. For health safety and to ensure it's done to standard, calling a certified mold remediation provider is the most reliable solution.
