AC leak causing black mold in Jumeirah Park?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet, and now I’m seeing a few small black spots starting to form along the base of the wall. It’s been so humid lately that I’m worried it’s just going to get worse. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself and who should I call to fix the AC leak for good?

The water leak is the primary issue that must be fixed first. In Dubai's high humidity, any persistent moisture will lead to mold growth. The black spots are a clear indicator.

For a small area, you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Apply it to the spots, let it sit for an hour, then scrub and dry the area completely. Never use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the underlying moisture or root structure of the mold.

However, DIY cleaning is only a temporary measure if the AC leak isn't resolved. You need to call a certified HVAC technician to diagnose and repair the leak's source, which is often a clogged condensate drain line or an issue with the insulation. They should also ensure the unit is properly sealed to prevent future condensation.

Given the location in a bedroom, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible spots may only be a fraction of the growth, as mold can spread behind walls and under carpet padding. A proper assessment, often involving moisture meters and sometimes air or surface sampling, is needed to determine the full extent. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide definitive identification of the mold type, which is critical for understanding any potential health risks and for verifying that remediation was successful.
