AC leak causing black mold risk with toddler nearby?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water into the closet where the unit is housed in our master bedroom. I wiped up the small puddle a couple of days ago, but now I’m seeing a few small black speckles on the wall and the musty smell is coming back. I’m really worried this is the start of black mold, especially with my toddler sleeping in the next room. What’s the best way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

Your concern is valid, especially with a toddler nearby. The black speckles are likely the early stages of mold growth, fueled by the persistent moisture from your AC leak and Dubai's high humidity.
For immediate action, wipe the area with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water), which can kill many surface molds. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan. However, this is a temporary fix. The leak is the primary issue; until the condensate drain line is unclogged or the drain pan is repaired, the moisture will return. In the UAE's climate, AC units constantly produce condensation, and a small leak creates a perfect breeding ground for mold that can spread spores into your bedroom air. Given the proximity to a child's room, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact mold species and the root cause of the leak. Remediation for a small, contained area like a closet is often straightforward but must be done correctly to prevent spore dispersal. To stop it for good, you must fix the AC leak first. Then, ensure the area is professionally cleaned, dried, and verified. A company with microbiology lab testing can provide before-and-after air quality samples to confirm the space is safe, which is the only way to have complete peace of mind. |
