AC leak causing mold and baby's stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Silicon Oasis seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet underneath, and now I'm starting to see a few small black spots in that area. My youngest has been waking up with a stuffy nose for the past week, and I'm really worried it's connected. What's the most effective way to clean this myself to stop it from spreading and making us sick, or should I just call the building management immediately?

The water leak and black spots are almost certainly mold, and the stuffy nose is a common reaction, especially in infants. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for this.

Stop the leak first. This is the building management's responsibility—contact them immediately to fix the AC drain line or condensation pan. Until it's repaired, the mold will keep returning.

For a small area, you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the spots with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a diluted detergent. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can worsen indoor air quality. Dry the carpet thoroughly with a wet/dry vacuum and fans; moisture is the real enemy.

However, with a baby showing symptoms, a DIY clean is a temporary fix. Surface cleaning doesn't address spores that may have become airborne or penetrated deeper into the carpet padding. The most effective approach is a professional inspection. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and air sampling to identify the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. In many Dubai apartments, leaks can affect neighboring units or wall cavities, requiring building management involvement for a complete solution.
