AC leak causing mold and cough; professional needed?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now my son has developed this persistent cough at night that our doctor thinks could be mold-related. I can’t really see any visible mold, but the carpet near the unit feels damp and the room has a faint, stale smell. Is this something I can tackle myself with a good cleaner and a dehumidifier, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company to check it out?

Based on your description, you absolutely need a professional inspection. A leaking AC unit creating damp carpet for weeks is a textbook scenario for hidden mold growth, especially in our high-humidity Dubai climate. The persistent nocturnal cough in your son is a significant red flag, as mold spores are a well-documented asthma and allergy trigger.
You cannot tackle this yourself for a few critical reasons. Standard cleaners won't eliminate the mold at its root, and a dehumidifier only addresses ambient humidity, not the saturated material. The mold is likely growing deep within the carpet underlay and possibly inside the AC drip pan and ductwork itself – areas you cannot effectively assess or remediate. Disturbing it with DIY cleaning will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, potentially worsening your son's respiratory symptoms significantly. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor air quality and mold remediation to protect occupant health. A certified professional will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels, then execute a controlled remediation plan that includes containment, HEPA filtration, and proper disposal of contaminated materials like that carpet.
