AC leak causing mold and stuffy nose: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now we’ve found black spots spreading on the back of the wardrobe. My husband has started waking up with a stuffy nose every morning. Is this something we can handle ourselves with bleach spray from ACE, or do we absolutely need to call in a professional mold remediation company, and what’s the typical cost for a room this size?

The black spots spreading from a persistent AC leak are a clear sign of active mold growth, and your husband's stuffy nose is a very common reaction. In Dubai's high humidity, this damp environment allows mold to thrive, especially inside walls or under flooring where the leak has penetrated.

DIY bleach spray is not recommended. It only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials but cannot address the root cause or the hidden growth within the porous wardrobe wood and potentially the wall behind it. The moisture must be stopped first; the AC leak repair is your absolute priority.

For a case of this scale with visible spreading and health symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly advised. Remediation involves containing the area to prevent spores from spreading, safely removing contaminated porous materials like the affected wardrobe section, and using specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and dehumidifiers to dry the structure completely. The cost for a single room remediation varies significantly based on the extent of hidden damage, but it is an investment in resolving the health issue and preventing structural damage to your villa.

Request a detailed assessment from a certified remediation company that can provide a scope of work and explain their containment, removal, and verification process.
