AC Leak Causing Mold in Bedroom: DIY Cleanup and Repair?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet, and now I’m seeing a few small black spots in the corner behind the wardrobe. It’s been super humid lately and I’m worried it’s the start of a big mold problem. What’s the best way to clean this up myself and who should I call to fix the AC leak for good?

Stop the leak first. Any DIY cleanup is temporary if the moisture source remains. The AC drain line is likely clogged, a very common issue in Dubai's humid climate causing constant condensation. Turn off the AC unit to prevent more water damage and call a certified HVAC technician to unclog and service the system.
For the small black spots, you can clean a surface area smaller than one square meter yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one cup of bleach to one gallon of water). Dry the carpet and underlying padding thoroughly with a wet-dry vacuum and fans; simply drying the surface is insufficient. However, given the location behind a wardrobe, the mold growth is likely more extensive underneath. Carpet padding acts like a sponge, and hidden mold can proliferate rapidly in our humidity. DIY methods only address surface mold, not the root problem within the material. For a confirmed leak and visible growth, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to assess the full extent of water damage behind walls and under floors. In many cases, the carpet and padding must be removed to properly dry and treat the subfloor. Companies with their own microbiology labs can also take tape or air samples to identify the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. This scientific approach ensures the issue is fully resolved, not just cosmetically cleaned. |
