AC leak causing mold in Dubai bedroom: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our master bedroom in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below it, and now I'm seeing a few small black patches of what I think is mold forming in the corner. It's been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That leak is a classic setup for mold in Dubai's climate. The constant humidity and AC condensation create ideal conditions for it to thrive. The black patches are likely a surface mold, but the real concern is what's growing inside the unit or under the carpet padding where you can't see it.
For a very small, surface-level patch (under 10 square feet), a DIY approach with distilled white vinegar can be effective for immediate containment. Bleach is not recommended as it doesn't kill the roots and its fumes can be hazardous in an enclosed space. However, this only addresses the symptom. The critical first step is stopping the source. You must have an HVAC technician repair the AC leak. No cleaning effort will be successful if moisture continues to seep in. Given the leak has been ongoing and the mold is visible on porous materials like carpet, a professional inspection is strongly advised. In the UAE, mold can spread rapidly through the backing and subfloor. A proper assessment involves moisture meters and, if necessary, air or surface sampling to identify the species and the full extent of the contamination, which is often greater than it appears. Remediation then involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence, ensuring it aligns with standards like the IICRC S520. For health safety and to ensure it's thoroughly resolved, calling a certified mold inspection company is the most reliable course of action. |
