AC leak causing mold: urgent professional help needed?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a little bit into the closet for maybe the last two weeks. I just pulled out some winter jackets and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots on the back wall and on a couple of leather bags. With this humidity, how urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with cleaning spray this weekend?

This situation requires professional assessment, not a DIY cleaning spray. A two-week leak in a JVC apartment with visible black and green fuzzy growth indicates an active moisture source, which in Dubai's humidity can lead to a widespread mold colony inside the wall cavity and AC unit itself.

You are likely seeing only the surface manifestation. The porous drywall and insulation behind it are probably saturated, acting as a reservoir for mold. Cleaning the surface will not address the root problem. The AC leak must be repaired first to stop the moisture, and the damaged building materials likely need replacement to prevent regrowth.

In high-humidity climates, certain molds like Aspergillus are commonly identified and can cause significant irritation, especially when the AC system then aerosolizes the spores throughout your apartment. For a leak of this duration, a professional inspection is recommended to determine the extent of the damage, identify the mold species, and create a targeted remediation plan that includes proper containment and air filtration to prevent cross-contamination.
