AC Leaking and Black Mold in Bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom AC unit in my Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing these scary black spots starting to form on the wall behind the curtain. I’m worried it’s black mold, especially with the humidity rising. What’s the most effective way to clean this up myself and what can I do to stop the AC from leaking and prevent it from coming back?

Stop the AC leak immediately—this is the priority. In Dubai's climate, continuous moisture from a leaking unit creates ideal conditions for mold growth. The black spots are likely Stachybotrys or similar, which thrive in constant dampness. Turn off the unit to prevent further water damage and move any furniture or bedding away from the affected area.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a detergent like Dettol, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the leak has been ongoing and the mold is on a porous surface like drywall, professional assessment is strongly advised. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation; the structure behind the wall could be more extensively compromised. To prevent recurrence, the AC leak must be fixed. Common causes in UAE units are a clogged condensate drain line or a damaged drain pan. A certified HVAC technician should clear the line, ensure proper drainage, and check the unit's insulation. Afterwards, use a dehumidifier or keep your AC running consistently to maintain low indoor humidity, as Dubai's external humidity will constantly challenge your indoor space. For verification and to understand the specific health risk, a lab test can identify the mold species. DIY cleaning often addresses only visible growth, and without fixing the source moisture and verifying removal, it will return. |
