AC mold and scratchy throat: emergency or can it wait?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom in my Jumeirah apartment has been making a weird damp smell for a couple of weeks, and this morning I spotted a few small black spots around the vent. My throat has been feeling a bit scratchy in the mornings too. Is this something I need to call a maintenance emergency for, or can it wait until my landlord's usual guy comes next week?

This warrants prompt attention but is not typically an emergency requiring after-hours service. The damp smell and black spots are strong indicators of microbial growth in your AC unit, which is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant condensation inside the systems.

Your scratchy throat is a common reaction to inhaling mold spores and other allergens being circulated from the contaminated unit. For most healthy adults, this causes temporary irritation like congestion or a sore throat. The risk is higher for individuals with asthma, allergies, or compromised immune systems.

You can schedule a professional inspection for next week. In the meantime, stop using the bedroom AC and keep the door closed to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms. Run the living room AC to help manage humidity. Do not attempt to clean the black spots yourself with bleach, as disturbing them without proper containment can release a large number of spores into your bedroom air.

A proper inspection involves checking the internal cooling coils, drip pan, and ductwork for the source of moisture and growth. A company with its own microbiology lab can take swab samples to identify the specific type of mold, which determines the appropriate remediation method. For a Jumeirah apartment, this is a standard procedure that your landlord's maintenance team should handle, but verifying they will do a thorough cleaning and not just a superficial wipe-down is key.
