AC mold around vent: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom AC unit in our Jumeirah Park villa has been leaking a bit, and now I've spotted these black speckles around the vent on the wall. It's been there for a couple of weeks and the room just feels damp. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company right away?

Black speckles around an AC vent following a leak are a strong indicator of active mould growth. In Dubai's high-humidity environment, this moisture doesn't evaporate quickly, creating an ideal breeding ground. The damp feeling in the room confirms the presence of excess moisture, which is the root cause.

While a small, surface-level amount might be tempting to clean with a diluted detergent, bleach is not recommended. It can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space and often fails to address the mould penetrating porous materials like drywall or insulation. More critically, DIY cleaning does not fix the leak itself. If the internal drip pan or drain line in the AC unit is clogged or damaged, the mould will simply return.

For a situation involving a persistent leak and visible growth on your wall, a professional inspection is the prudent course of action. They will identify and rectify the source of the moisture—the most crucial step—and assess the extent of the mould. In many villas, water can travel within the wall cavity, making the problem larger than it appears.

A reputable provider will use containment procedures during cleaning to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home and can verify the results with post-remediation testing. For health safety, especially in a bedroom, ensuring the mould is properly resolved is key.
