AC mold around vent: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for the past month, and now I’m seeing black spots around the vent on the ceiling. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back within a week. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

The black spots and damp smell indicate active mold growth in your AC system, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate where condensation constantly feeds mold in ductwork. Vinegar is ineffective for porous surfaces like drywall and doesn't address the root cause inside the unit.

For a small, surface-level issue confined solely to the visible vent cover, a thorough DIY cleaning with a mold-specific cleaner (not bleach) can be attempted. However, since the smell originates from the AC itself and the spots reappeared quickly, the contamination is almost certainly inside the ductwork or evaporator coil, which requires professional intervention.

In the UAE, proper remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA vacuums, and applying antimicrobial coatings to prevent rapid regrowth. Given the health risks from disturbed spores and the high likelihood of systemic contamination, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use borescopes to assess the ducts and lab-test swabs to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. For a problem of this nature in JVC, a DIY approach often leads to recurrence and potential health exposure.
