AC mold back after vinegar: DIY fix or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a patch of black and green mold on the wall behind the headboard. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back darker in just a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger stuff from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional?

Vinegar often fails on porous surfaces like drywall because it only kills surface mold without addressing the root moisture problem or the hyphae (roots) growing deep within the material. Its quick return, and darker appearance, indicates a persistent and active colony behind the wall.

This situation in Dubai's climate is a high priority for professional assessment. The continuous AC operation creates significant condensation, and a leak inside the unit's drain pan or pipe is likely feeding moisture into your wall cavity. This creates an ideal, hidden environment for mold to thrive unseen. Disturbing it further with DIY methods can aerosolize spores throughout your bedroom.

For a leak-driven infestation of this size, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will identify and repair the AC leak source—the critical first step—then assess the extent of growth within the wall cavity using moisture meters and possibly borescope cameras. Remediation involves isolating the area, safely removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, and HEPA vacuuming before applying EPA-approved antimicrobials.

While a hardware store biocide might seem stronger, improper use is ineffective and can be hazardous. Verifiable remediation, often guided by standards like the IICRC S520, ensures the problem is solved completely and your indoor air quality is restored.
