AC Mold Behind Bed: Remove Mysef or Call Management?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet, and now I’ve found a patch of black and green mold behind our son’s bed. He’s been sneezing a lot more than usual this past week and I’m really worried it’s affecting his health. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold ourselves, or should we call our building management first?

Stop using the AC unit immediately to prevent further moisture. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given the location behind a bed and your son's symptoms, this is likely a larger issue.
The AC leak is the root cause. In Dubai's humid climate, this constant moisture allows mold to thrive and spread inside walls or under carpets. You must report this to your building management first, as they are responsible for fixing the AC leak—this is a common maintenance issue in UAE apartments. Simply cleaning the visible mold is a temporary fix if the water source isn't repaired. Given the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent. Hidden growth in the AC unit or wall cavity is common here. Proper remediation involves containing the area, removing contaminated materials like wet carpet, and using HEPA filtration. Once the leak is fixed and mold removed, ensure the area is thoroughly dried to prevent regrowth. |
