AC mold behind bedroom unit: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold, about the size of a dinner plate, on the wall behind the unit in my Jumeirah Village Triangle townhouse. I’ve tried wiping it with vinegar but it just comes back darker. Is this something I can handle myself with a proper cleaner from ACE Hardware, or should I just call a professional mold remediation company and what would that likely cost in Dubai?

Given the size of the mold patch (dinner plate) and its recurrence after a DIY attempt, this requires professional remediation. The leak has likely saturated the wall's internal structure, creating a hidden reservoir of moisture that vinegar surface wipes cannot address. In Dubai's high humidity, this mold will continue to return until the moisture source is eliminated and the contaminated materials are properly treated or replaced.

A professional inspection is critical here. They will identify the exact cause of the AC leak—often a clogged drain line or faulty installation—and assess the full extent of the water damage within the wall cavity. The visible mold is frequently just a fraction of the actual growth. Proper remediation involves containment to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house, removal of affected porous materials like drywall or insulation, and HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatment of the area.

For a job of this scale in a townhouse, expect the cost to be significant, reflecting the multi-step process of leak repair, mold removal, and restoration. The price is driven by the labor, materials, and specialized equipment required, not just the visible patch. A reputable company will provide a detailed assessment and quote before any work begins. Given the health risks of improper handling, especially in a bedroom, a professional approach is the only way to ensure it is resolved completely and safely.
