AC mold behind headboard: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit and now there's this black, speckled stuff spreading on the wall behind the headboard. I tried wiping it with some vinegar, but it came back worse a few days later and the room still smells damp. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

That black speckled pattern returning after a vinegar wipe is a strong indicator of active mould growth, not just surface staining. In Dubai’s climate, the combination of a leaking AC unit and high ambient humidity creates a persistent moisture source that mould needs to thrive. The damp smell confirms the issue is ongoing.
A DIY approach is unlikely to resolve this. Vinegar or stronger cleaners only address the visible surface, leaving the root colony intact within your wall. The moisture from the leak has likely penetrated the gypsum board, and mould can grow on both the front and back of the wall, behind the paint. Scrubbing it can inadvertently release a high concentration of spores into your bedroom air. For this scenario, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The priority is stopping the leak at its source—an AC technician must repair the drain line or condensation pan causing the water damage. Then, a mould specialist should assess the wall. They will determine if the drywall needs to be cut out and replaced, which is common when water damage is recurrent, and perform targeted remediation to remove the infestation safely. Verification is key. Reputable companies provide before-and-after documentation, often through lab analysis, to confirm the species and that the environment has been returned to a healthy state. Given the location in your bedroom, where you spend hours breathing the air, ensuring it’s properly handled is important for your indoor air quality. |
