AC mold behind vent: DIY fix or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Al Barsha has been leaking a bit into the wall for a while, and now we’re seeing a bunch of black spots spreading out from behind the vent. We tried wiping it with bleach, but it came back even worse a week later. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company?

Bleach returning worse points to a deeper issue within the wall cavity. In Dubai's high humidity, hidden condensation from a leaking AC unit creates a persistent moisture source that surface cleaning cannot address. The mold behind the vent is likely just the visible portion of a larger colony.

For a recurring leak causing visible spreading, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the damage inside the wall, which is critical. Proper remediation involves fixing the leak, removing affected drywall, and treating the cavity. DIY attempts often spread spores and miss the root cause.

Companies with their own microbiology labs can identify the mold species from a tape lift sample, which informs the correct remediation protocol—some types require specific antimicrobials. This science-driven approach ensures the problem is resolved, not just the visible stain.
