AC mold behind wall: DIY bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a little bit for a couple of months, but now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold on the wall behind the curtain. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell is still there and I’m worried it’s inside the wall. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach or should I just call a professional cleaning company to be safe?

A vinegar wipe addresses surface mold but won't remediate growth inside your wall cavity, which is highly likely after a months-long leak. The persistent musty smell is a clear indicator the mold has established itself deeper.

In Dubai's high humidity, AC condensate leaks create a persistent damp environment perfect for mold to penetrate porous materials like drywall and insulation. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces; it only bleaches the visible surface and does not address the root moisture problem or the hidden fungal network.

For a leak of this duration with visible growth and odor, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of damage inside the wall. Remediation often requires controlled removal of affected drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to properly resolve the issue and prevent recurrence.

Attempting a DIY fix risks inadequate containment, spreading spores to other parts of your home, and missing the primary moisture source, leading to the problem quickly returning. Since the AC unit itself could also be contaminated, a comprehensive assessment should include the system.
