AC mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the wall for a couple of weeks and now there’s a decent-sized black splotch of mold spreading behind the wardrobe. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell is still there and I'm worried it's inside the wall. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger cleaning stuff, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

The black splotch from an AC leak is a serious concern, as it indicates prolonged moisture and a high probability of mold growth inside the wall cavity. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can spread rapidly behind surfaces even after the visible part is wiped away. Vinegar only addresses surface-level growth and will not remediate the root problem.

For a leak lasting weeks, the wall's internal structure is likely compromised. Attempting a DIY fix with stronger chemicals like bleach is not advisable; it poses health risks from fumes and fails to address hidden contamination, which will simply regrow. The persistent musty smell confirms the mold is still active.

This requires professional assessment. Dubai Municipality has specific protocols for mold remediation to ensure it is handled safely and effectively. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's internal damage and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing affected materials like drywall or insulation, HEPA vacuuming, and applying professional-grade antimicrobial solutions to prevent recurrence.

The first step is to stop the leak at its source—have an HVAC technician repair the AC drain line or condensation issue immediately. Then, contact a company with microbial remediation credentials to assess and fix the water damage. Addressing both the moisture source and the biological contamination is the only way to resolve it permanently.
