AC mold behind wardrobe: DIY or professional remediation?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a little for a while, and now we’ve discovered a patch of black mold on the wall behind the bedroom wardrobe. It’s been humid for the last month and the spot seems to be getting bigger. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from ACE, or should I just call a professional company for mold remediation, and what would that likely cost for a small area?

A leaky AC unit causing black mold in Jumeirah Village Circle is a common issue due to our high humidity and constant AC operation. For a patch that is actively growing behind furniture, a professional assessment is strongly recommended.

While small surface mold on non-porous tiles can sometimes be managed with a bleach solution, the situation you describe is more complex. The visible patch on the wall is likely just the tip of the iceberg; moisture can penetrate deep into the gypsum board and the structure behind it. DIY cleaning with bleach often only bleaches the surface without addressing the root moisture problem or the hyphae (roots) growing within the wall. This leads to rapid regrowth.

In Dubai's climate, the primary cause must be fixed first. A technician must identify and repair the AC condensate drain line leak to stop the moisture source. For remediation, the affected section of drywall often needs to be carefully removed and disposed of to prevent spreading spores, followed by professional antimicrobial treatment of the cavity. The cost for a small, localized remediation like this can vary, but it is typically a focused job. You should request an on-site inspection for an accurate assessment.

Attempting a DIY fix risks inadequate containment, spreading spores to other parts of your bedroom, and missing the source, guaranteeing the problem will return. For health safety and a permanent solution, a certified mold remediation provider is the prudent choice.
