AC Mold: Can I Clean It or Call a Pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Jumeirah Park has been blowing out a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing some black specks around one of the vents in the master bedroom. I’m worried it’s mold, but I’m not sure if it’s something I can safely clean myself with a bleach solution or if I absolutely need to call a professional for a proper inspection.

Black specks and a damp smell from your AC vent in Jumeirah Park strongly indicate microbial growth. Due to Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, condensation inside the unit creates a perfect environment for mold.

A small amount of surface mold on a vent cover might be cleaned with a dilute bleach solution, but this is only a temporary fix if the growth is inside the ductwork or the AC unit itself. Spraying chemicals into the system can disperse spores throughout your home and is not recommended.

For your situation, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The smell and visible growth suggest a contamination source deeper within the system. A proper inspection involves using borescopes to view inside ducts and air handlers, and often includes air and surface sampling to be analyzed by a microbiology lab. This identifies the mold type and concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. Cleaning an active colony incorrectly can make the problem significantly worse.
