ac mold casing scratchy throat: clean myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell that’s been making my throat feel scratchy for the last couple of weeks. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in this black, fuzzy stuff. I’m worried it’s mold and that it’s affecting our health, but I’m not sure if this is something I can clean myself with bleach or if I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

That black, fuzzy substance is very likely mold, and the damp smell and scratchy throat are common symptoms of exposure. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth inside units, where condensation provides moisture.
For a surface-level issue, you can attempt a careful cleaning. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Remove the filter and replace it—cleaning a moldy filter is ineffective. Wipe non-porous surfaces inside the unit with a diluted white vinegar solution, as bleach doesn't prevent regrowth and its fumes are problematic in enclosed spaces. However, if the mold is on the filter's backside, the growth is likely deep within the evaporator coils or drip pan, which are inaccessible for proper DIY cleaning. In this case, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use specialized tools to see inside the ductwork and unit, identify the moisture source, and perform a thorough cleaning that includes antimicrobial treatments to delay regrowth. For health-sensitive individuals, a lab test can identify the mold species to better understand any potential risks. Given your symptoms and the visible growth, a professional assessment is the most reliable way to resolve the health concern and ensure the problem is properly addressed at its source. |
