AC mold causing allergies: DIY clean or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet has been leaking a little for a couple of weeks and now we’ve found black mold spreading on the back wall and on some of our shoes. My youngest son has bad allergies and has been sneezing a lot more than usual, and I’m really worried it’s connected. What’s the best way to handle this safely for my family—should I try to clean it myself with vinegar or is it a job for a professional company here in Dubai?

The leaking AC and visible black mold require immediate professional remediation, especially with a family member experiencing worsened allergies. In Dubai's high humidity, DIY cleaning often fails to address the root cause—the moisture source inside the AC unit—and can inadvertently spread spores.

Vinegar or bleach only removes surface stains on non-porous materials and does not address the colony's roots or airborne spores. For porous items like drywall and shoes, cleaning is rarely effective; disposal is often the only safe option for allergenic individuals. The primary risk with DIY is incomplete removal, leading to rapid regrowth and continued exposure.

A professional inspection is critical here. They will first identify and repair the AC leak, which is the moisture source. For remediation, certified teams use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination while removing and disposing of moldy materials. Post-remediation verification, ideally with independent lab testing, confirms the air and surfaces are safe.

Given your son's allergies, this is not a DIY project. Look for a provider with certifications like IICRC and one that offers post-remediation testing to verify the job's success.
