AC mold causing cough: DIY clean or call Dubai pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been making us cough for a couple of weeks, and I finally pulled the filter out to find it covered in black and green fuzzy spots. I’ve wiped down the visible parts of the unit with vinegar, but I’m worried it’s spread inside the ducts. Is this something I can tackle myself with a deep clean, or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning service here in Dubai?

That visible mold on the filter is a clear sign the system needs attention, and your cough is a common reaction to the spores being circulated. Dubai's high humidity creates constant condensation inside AC units, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive.

A vinegar wipe-down of accessible surfaces is a good first step, but it's unlikely to address the root problem. The mold has almost certainly colonized the damp interior coils and drain pan, which you cannot properly access or treat without disassembling the unit. More critically, if spores have spread into the ductwork, a surface clean is ineffective.

For a persistent cough and visible growth, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. DIY chemical sprays can be hazardous if misapplied and often just mask the problem temporarily. A reputable service will disassemble the unit to clean the coils and drain pan with specialized biocides, then use HEPA vacuuming to remove spores from the ducts. The key is to request before-and-after testing; this provides documented proof that the microbial load has been measurably reduced and the air quality improved.

Until it's serviced, replace the filter with a high-quality allergen-rated one and run the fan to help circulate fresh air. For a system in Jumeirah Park serving a bedroom, a professional deep clean is the most reliable solution to protect your health.
