AC mold causing health issues: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a while, and now I’m seeing a patch of black and green mold spreading out from the wall near the vent. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head and itchy eyes for the past month. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a mask, or is this a job for a professional cleaning company?

The symptoms you're describing are commonly linked to AC mould exposure. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mould growth from leaks like this.
For a small, surface-level patch, a DIY approach can be attempted. Use a microfiber cloth, warm water with a small amount of detergent, and wear an N95 mask. Bleach is not recommended as it only removes surface colour and does not address the root problem; its fumes can also be harmful in an enclosed space. However, given the leak has been ongoing and the mould is on both the wall and likely the carpet backing, this is a case for professional assessment. The moisture has probably penetrated the wall cavity and underlay, creating a larger hidden colony that DIY cleaning cannot address. A proper remediation involves identifying the leak's source, containing the area to prevent spore spread, removing contaminated porous materials like carpet sections, and using HEPA filtration. In Dubai, companies with their own microbiology labs can provide before-and-after testing to verify the environment is safe, which is crucial for resolving health-related issues. For a persistent leak and recurring symptoms, this level of thoroughness is necessary. |
