AC mold causing health issues: how urgent is cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom’s AC unit has been leaking a little for the past few weeks, and now I’ve just found patches of black mold on the wall behind the curtain. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for days, and we're both starting to get worried. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, and should we be sleeping in another room in the meantime?

The situation you describe requires immediate attention. Given the visible mold growth and correlating health symptoms, professional remediation should be scheduled within days, not weeks. The persistent moisture from the leaking AC unit creates an ideal environment for mold to proliferate, and the symptoms you're experiencing are a common reaction to prolonged mold exposure.

For your health, it is strongly advised to sleep in another well-ventilated room until the issue is resolved. Continuing to sleep in that room will likely prolong the allergic reactions. In Dubai's climate, where we rely on AC year-round, a small leak can quickly lead to significant hidden mold growth inside the wall cavity and the AC unit itself, which often isn't visible without specialized equipment.

A proper remediation involves more than just wiping the wall. The AC unit must be inspected, cleaned, and the leak repaired to prevent immediate recurrence. The affected section of the drywall may also need to be cut out and replaced if the moisture has deeply penetrated. Seek a provider that can conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping, and provides documented before-and-after evidence of remediation, such as lab test results, to verify the environment has been returned to a safe state.
